BDS stands for bachelors of dental surgery. After pursuing a BDS course a person is eligible to work as a dentist. It is one of the most opted course after MBBS. With increasing demand of dentist this course has taken a high pace amongst medical aspirants.

Eligibility

Anyone from science stream (physics , chemistry , biology or mathematics ) can get admission in a BDS course. Few selected eligibility criteria are :

  1. A person appearing for admission in BDS course should pass in all science subjects with at least 40-50% percentile.
  2. Age is another major parameter for eligibility to appear for BDS entrance. One should not be less than 17 years while appearing for BDS entrance exam.

Entrance Exam pattern 

Admission in a BDS course is a tough task. But as it is said where there is a will , there is a way. So keeping this in mind if you want to pursue BDS as a career choice then you should start preparation beforehand.

Entry in any of the reputed BDS institutions is via a nationwide competitive exam.

All India premedical /pre dental entrance exam is the common entrance exam for entry into BDS and MBBS courses. Colleges are allotted on the basis of your rank and marks obtained.

Syllabus content

Bachelor of dental surgery has a very broad syllabus. It is designed in a way to make an individual job ready just after completion of the course. The syllabus is taught semester wise.

  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • Human oral anatomy , physiology , histology and tooth morphology.
  • Oral pathology and microbiology.
  • Materials used in dentistry.
  • Human physiology.

Future prospects 

One can choose from multiple options available. Few of them can be pursuing a higher degree in dental surgery. If you don’t want to pursue a higher degree then you can work in any of the public or private sector dental hospital.
